Newsletter   I  SEPTEMBER 2001

AMERICA, AN INTERNATIONAL COUNTRY

On August 10th, we had a chance to visit a friend of ours from China in Falls Church, VA. It was quite interesting to find that the September issue of National Geographic had featured an article about the same city and a local school there. The J.E.B. Stuart High School is a mixture of students from 70 different countries in the world and more than half of them must learn English as a second language. If you're struggling to learn English, you're definitely not alone. The article goes on to state that in 1990 some 32 million U.S. residents spoke a language other than English at home. When the data from the 2000 census becomes available the number is sure to be much larger. The article comments that the U.S. is on its way of becoming the first country in history that is literally made up of every part of the world.

In the Bible in the Book of Revelation we read of a time when people of all nations will be gathered together:

After these things I looked, and behold, a great multitude which no one could number, of all nations, tribes, peoples, and tongues, standing before the throne and before the Lamb, clothed with white robes, with palm branches, in their hands, and crying out with a loud voice, saying, "Salvation belongs to our God who sits on the throne, and to the Lamb!" --REVELATIONS 7:9-10

LETTER FROM THE ISF ASSISTANT
Dear International Friend,

How quickly the summertime has passed us by. Now that we have celebrated Labor Day, most students have returned or are returning back to the classroom. We were so glad to have so many of our friends at our ISF picnic at the end of August. It appears that it was the largest ISF picnic ever with 180 present from 13 different countries. A lot of the credit goes to our dear International friends who invited your International friends and so our International family grows!

On September 9, 1776 the Continental Congress changed the name of the United Colonies to the United States. In 1778, on the thirteenth day of September, New York City became the first U.S. capital. September 14, 1814 is noted in history as the day Francis Scott Key wrote "The Star Spangled Banner." On September 22, 1789 the US Post Office was established. We've come a long way since then and the computer is fast becoming a quick and conniving method of communication.

We hope your busy schedule will permit you to attend our September monthly gathering at the William Pitt Union. This gathering will be on Friday, September 14th, 7:30 PM in the beautiful Ballroom of the William Pitt Union. The William Pitt Union is located in Oakland on the corner of Bigelow and Fifth Avenue. To get to the Ballroom, use the entrance on Fifth Avenue and then follow the signs.

At this gathering, Dr. Paul Kaufman (a Hebrew scholar) from Salem, Ohio will be speaking to us. I think you will find him a very interesting speaker. Of course there will be good music and the traditional ISF full course dinner. There will be children's activities in the Kurtzman Room, and the wonderful International fellowship. Please plan to come and invite your friends. It is all free!

We look forward to seeing you on September 14th!

AUGUST ISF PICNIC

THREE IMPORTANT THINGS GOD WANTS YOU TO HAVE

There are three wonderful things God wants to give you. In fact, He wanted to give these three things so much He was willing to give His only Son Jesus to die so you could have all three. Even more, these three things are entirely free. You don't have to pay for them. In addition, you don't have to work to earn them and really you could never work hard enough to deserve them. All three can only be received as free gifts. Now wouldn't it be foolish to not receive these three wonderful gifts, which God wants to give you. Yet sadly, many people are too proud, too busy, too filled with dreams of pleasure and great wealth in this world to even think about their need of these.

  1. God wants you to have "forgiveness" of all your sins -- all you have to do is confess them to Him with true sorrow.
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and and just to forgive us our
sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
    1 John 1:9
  2. God wants you to have "victory" in your heart over sin -- all you have to do is trust Him for it.
For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is
the victory that has overcome the world, even our faith. Who is
he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus
              is the Son of God
    ?     1 John 5:4-5
  3. God wants you to have "Jesus" living in your heart -- all you have to do is open the door and let Him in.
Behold, I stand at the door and knock. I f anyone hears
My voice and opens the door, I will come in to him and dine
with him, and he with M

Hope to see you at the September ISF Picnic on September 14th, in the Ballroom of the William Pitt Union!
