THE TEACHER WHO POINTED UPWARD

Years ago, there lived in Switzerland a great schoolmaster whose name was Pestalozzi. He was held in highest esteem and greatly loved especially by the children who came under his character-molding influence. At his death, it was generally felt that a monument, commemorative of his life of selfless service, should be erected, though the schoolmaster had erected an enduring memorial in the hearts of others. The monument was erected. The day for its unveiling came. The sculptor had succeeded so well in reproducing the likeness of the schoolmaster that all looked upon the statue with hushed reverence and admiration. The teacher was shown looking down upon the kneeling form of a little child whose uplifted gaze focused upon the face of the teacher. Though the statue was a wonderful work of art, the schoolmaster's most intimate friends felt that the sculptor had failed to represent the dominant desire of the pedagogue-not to have those he taught look with wonderment upon him, but upward to the challenging heights of goals as yet unattained, and to God. So a change was made. At the second unveiling all were pleased to see a kneeling child, looking, not to the face of the teacher, but to the beckoning beyond.

WISDOM

And they that be wise shall shine as the brightness as the firmament; and they that turn many to righteousness as the stars for ever and ever.
                                                                                  -- DANIEL 12:3

Who is wise and understanding among you? Let him show by good conduct that his works are done in the meekness of wisdom. But if you have bitter envy and self-seeking in your hearts, do not boast and lie against the truth. This wisdom does not descend from above, but is earthly, sensual, demonic. For where envy and self-seeking exist, confusion and every evil thing are there. But the wisdom that is from above is first pure, then peaceable, gentle, willing to yield, full of mercy and good fruits, without partiality and without hypocrisy. Now the fruit of righteousness is sown in peace by those who make peace.
                                                                                  -- JAMES 3: 13-18

LETTER FROM THE ISF ASSISTANTS
Dear International Friend,

We hope you have had a very enjoyable summer. Labor Day on September 5th was the unofficial last day of summer vacation. By now, many students have returned to the classroom. How interesting it is that when we are younger going to school is just something we have to do. Some children are very anxious to get back to be with their friends and to meet their new teachers and to learn new things. Others just don't like the restrictions of the classroom and would prefer to be on vacation much longer. As we get older we realize that continued studies are many times the key to a better job and better salary so we spend time, effort and money to achieve that goal. Some have found the classroom to be the place where they not only simply enjoy learning but hope some day to be in the position of teacher or professor to share with others the knowledge and wisdom that they have gained. We feel it is a privilege for someone to have the position of teacher but along with that is the great responsibility to live a life so that students can respect and honor the teacher. We hope this will be a good year for all of you.

This month our gathering will be on Friday, September 23rd . Byron Gurnee will be the speaker for the evening. Many of you remember the Gurnee family. They lived in the Pittsburgh area for several years and were assistants in our organization. He is now the pastor of a church in Pennsylvania . Byron and his wife Julie and their children are looking forward to seeing you again and to make some new friends. We hope you will join us if you are in the Pittsburgh area.

So again, the date of the September ISF Gathering will be on Friday, September 23rd at 7:30 PM in the beautiful Ballroom of the William Pitt Union . The William Pitt Union is located in Oakland on the corner of Bigelow and Fifth Avenue . To get to the Ballroom, use the entrance on Fifth Avenue and then follow the signs. In addition to hearing Byron Gurnee speak, there will be special music and warm fellowship along with our full course meal. Of course the children will be having special activities in the Kurtzman room. It's all free.

We look forward to seeing you on September 23rd!
