I AUGUST 2006
THE HIGHER THE BAMBOO GROWS -- THE LOWER IT BENDS
A government official who came into President Lincoln's office was startled to find the chief executive shining his shoes, “Sir, he gasped, “surely you do not polish your own shoes!” “Of course,” replied the humble President. “Whose do you polish?” The greatness of a man is evidenced by his humility. In the words of an old Filipino saying, “The higher the bamboo grows, the lower it bends.” All of this is illustrated in the life of Jesus, “Jesus did not come to be served but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
(Matthew 20:28)
Yes! You Can!
As a couple drove up the steep, winding road in the Cave of the Winds near Colorado Springs, they came suddenly to a narrow passageway between high rock walls through which it looked as if the car could not possibly go. But facing them was sign which said: “Yes, you can! Millions of others have!” And so, driving carefully through, they soon came to a wider roadway. So many times we face seemingly insoluble problems and impossible situations. But we can know that God is able to open ways before us which are now hidden from our view. We may hear God's message to us: “Yes, you can! Millions of others have gone this way. Be of good cheer. Trust in the Lord and go ahead!”
BROKENNESS
God uses broken things. It takes broken soil to produce a crop, broken clouds to produce rain, broken grain to give bread and broken bread to give strength.
Be A Doer
If you have a gift — bring it.
If you have a song — sing it.
If you have a talent — use it.
If you have love — diffuse it.
It you have sadness — bear it.
If you have gladness — share it.
If you have happiness — give it.

LETTER
FROM THE ISF ASSISTANTS
Dear International Friend,
In July we took a short trip to Portland , Maine . It was the first time we had ever traveled to that state. My wife and I thought that the Portland Headlight Lighthouse was very beautiful. The first time we stopped by to see it the day was misty and foggy and the foghorn was a reminder of danger. The second time we stopped by, the weather was sunny. We could see quite a distance out on the water. There was no need for any warnings from the foghorn. Sometimes in life the future seems clear and the and direction we are going seems bright. We feel very confident. Then there are times of cloudiness and our way does not seem so clear. In those times, difficult as it may seem, God is wanting to help us to rely on Him just like sailor relies on the foghorn. He is waiting for you to seek His guidance and wisdom for the problems you are facing. Our August ISF Gathering will be very special for it is the time for our Annual ISF Cook-Out ! The date is Friday, August 4 th at the Vietnam Veteran's Pavilion in Schenley Park. The pavilion will be open at 3:00 PM and the picnic meal will be served at around 6:30 PM. This is always the ultimate summer “family time” and it's all free. So please invite your friends. Even if you don't usually eat meat, there will be plenty of other food for you to enjoy. If you like, feel free to bring something from your own country to add to the table. There will also be games and swings, etc. for all to enjoy. ( Below is a map to get to the Vietnam Veteran's Pavilion in Schenley Park .) If you need a ride, the ISF van (light blue) will also be making several trips from Hillman Library to the park starting at about 5:45 PM . We look forward to seeing you on August 4th!
