I JULY 2007
THE POWER OF ONE |
One song can spark a moment
One flower can wake the dream
One tree can start a forest
One bird can herald spring
One smile begins friendship
One handclasp lifts a soul
One star can guide a ship at sea
One word can flame the goal
One touch can offer hope
One sunbeam lights a room
One candle wipes out darkness
One laugh can conquer gloom
One step must start each journey
One word must start a prayer
One hope will raise the spirits
One touch can show you care
One voice can speak with wisdom
One heart can know what's true
One life can make a difference
You see, it's up to you

HE CAME AT GREAT COST |
Joseph Damien was a nineteenth-century missionary who ministered to people with leprosy on the island of Molokai , Hawaii . Those suffering grew to love him and revered the sacrificial life he lived out before them. One morning before Damien was to lead daily worship, he was pouring some hot water into a cup when the water swirled out and fell onto his bare foot. It took him a moment to realize the he had not felt any sensation. Gripped by the sudden fear of what this could mean, he poured more hot water on the same spot. No feeling whatsoever.
Damien immediately knew what had happened. As he walked tearfully to deliver his sermon, no one at first noticed the difference in his opening line. He normally began every sermon with, “My fellow believers.” But this morning he began with, “My fellow lepers.”
In a greater measure Jesus came into this world knowing what it would cost him. He bore in his pure being the marks of evil, that we might be made pure. “For this I came into the world” (John 18:37)

Quote of Wisdom
Be patient enough to live one day at a time as Jesus taught us, letting yesterday go and leaving tomorrow till it arrives.

LETTER FROM THE ISF DIRECTORS
Dear International Friend,
We continue to enjoy some very beautiful weather this summer. Some of the days here in Pittsburgh seem almost perfect. Of course there have been some hot and rainy times but over all it has been a nice start to the summer season. Once again we are celebrating the Birthday of the United States on July Fourth. We hope you will enjoy a cookout, a parade, a family and friend time and then fireworks to end your holiday celebration. Recently we took our grandsons to the Pittsburgh Zoo. Although it's very tiring for the grandparents, our grandchildren had a lot of fun. Tyler (age 3½) especially liked the train and the aquarium. He enjoys fishing. DJ, his brother (age 1½), just likes to run as fast as he can. We are looking forward to having our granddaughter Breanna (age 1) visit with us at the beginning of August.

Many of you may know that this is the hurricane season. Even though we do not experience the direct effects of a hurricane we can receive winds and heavy rains as it moves closer to the State of Pennsylvania . Here is an interesting story we found.
A camera crew was on assignment in southern Florida filming the widespread destruction of Hurricane Andrew. In one scene, amid the devastation and debris stood one house on its foundation. The owner was cleaning up the yard when a reporter approached him. “Sir, why is your house the only one still standing?” asked the reporter. “How did you manage to escape the severe damage of the hurricane?” “I built this house myself,” the man replied. “I also built it according to the Florida state building code. When the code called for two-by-six trusses, I used two-by-six trusses. I was told that a house built according to code could withstand a hurricane. I did, and it did. I suppose no one else around here followed the code.”
