250 YEARS AGO…

In November 1758, British General John Forbes, Colonel George Washington and their British and Colonial troops assumed possession of the French Fort Duquesne at the confluence of the Allegheny, Monongahela and Ohio rivers. They constructed Fort Pitt, named after England’s Sir William Pitt. There, the settlement of Pittsburgh grew to become known as the “Gateway to the West.”
PITTSBURGH – JUST A FEW OF THE WORLD FIRSTS:
- 1778 Hand Hospital opened. This was the first federal hospital built in America.
- 1845 The first wire cable suspension aqueduct bridge in the world was built by John Augustus Roebling to span the Allegheny River at 11th Street.
- 1854 Samuel Kier established the first successful petroleum refinery in the Western hemisphere.
- 1869 The first practical air brake for railroads was invented by George Westinghouse.
- 1888 World's first production of commercial aluminum by the Pittsburgh Reduction Company later the Aluminum Company of America (ALCOA).
- 1885 Westinghouse Electric implemented alternating current invented by Nikola Tesla, allowing long-distance transmission of electricity for the first time.
- 1889 The Carnegie Library of Braddock, the first Carnegie Library in America, was dedicated.
- 1913 First gas station was built by Gulf Oil on the corner of Baum Boulevard and St. Clair Street in East Liberty.
- 1920 The world's first broadcast by a commercially licensed radio station was November 2, 1920, on KDKA Radio, Pittsburgh.
- 1921 First church radio broadcast in the world from Calvary Protestant Episcopal Church on KDKA.
- 1953 Dr. Jonas E. Salk, a 38-year-old University of Pittsburgh researcher and professor, reported success of a new polio vaccine.
- 1957 The world's first full-scale atomic-powered plant for production of electricity was opened at Shippingport, Pennsylvania.
- 1961 Pittsburgh's Civic Arena is the world's first auditorium with a retractable roof.
- 1967 McDonald’s first Big Mac was created by M. J. "Jim" Delligatti in Pittsburgh.
- 1979 The world’s first Robotics Institute at Carnegie Mellon University.
- 1982 The Smiley :-) was the first Internet emoticon, created by Carnegie Mellon University computer scientist Scott Fahlman.
- 1989 First heart, liver and kidney transplant done in simultaneous operations at Presbyterian-University Hospital.

LETTER FROM THE ISF DIRECTORS
Dear International Friend,
Greetings to you from International Student Fellowship. We hope this letter finds you enjoying the summer weather. Here in Pittsburgh things will gradually get warmer and warmer. Some of you may be experiencing weather that is getting hotter and hotter. Our family in Florida has told us that it is pretty hot in Florida already. We hope you will enjoy the days of summer wherever you live.In this month’s ISF Newsletter, we are exploring some interesting facts about Pittsburgh. As many of you might already realize, 2008 is the 250 year birthday of the naming of Pittsburgh. We hope you all feel a warm welcome to our city.

June 20th ISF Gathering
We would like to invite you to the June ISF Gathering.
This gathering will be on Friday, June 20th at 7:30 PM in the Ballroom of the William Pitt Union. The William Pitt Union is located in Oakland on the corner of Bigelow and Fifth Avenue. To get to the Ballroom, use the entrance on Fifth Avenue and go to your right.
The month of June marks a special birthday for our ISF Founder, P. D. Stonebraker. During this month he turns 80. At the June Gathering we have asked him to speak and share how God led him and his wife to begin ISF 48 years ago. Please make this a special time and come and invite your friends as we honor this dear man.
There will also be special music, a wonderful meal, and warm fellowship. Also, there will be special children’s activities in the Kurtzman room. We hope you can come and please invite your friends. Remember that it’s all free!
