ADVERSITY

I have recently been reading a book entitled The Worst Hard Time. It is a story of those who survived the Great American Dust Bowl during the Great Depression. While others fled the Dust Bowl some stayed and survived.  What happens when we face adversity or as some would say “Tough Times?” Throughout history men and women from all countries have had to face tough times. Some have met the challenge head on and came through their time of trouble a better person. Others have let the difficulty make them bitter and that influence has affected those around them. Then there are those who just give up and give in. What category would you place yourself in?

Some adversity may come in the form of just some annoyance in everyday life. We can just hope for the best or make those things stepping stones to face the next challenge in life. Other times of trouble can be devastating. Some may feel as though there is no purpose to it and they become despondent or despair. We admit that no one wants to experience these circumstances.

George Mueller, who was a Christian man of great faith and experienced wonderful answers to prayer in times of distress, said this, “Oh, remember this: there is never a time when we may not hope in God. Whatever our necessities, however great our difficulties, and though to all appearance help is impossible, yet our business is to hope in God, and it will be found that it is not in vain.”

In the Bible we read these words, “Be of good courage, and He shall strengthen your heart, all you who hope in the Lord.” Psalm 31:24 NKJV Today and every day, we can ask God to give us a clearer perspective concerning our problems and also the courage to do what needs to be done. No problem or difficulty is too big for God-not even yours.

QUOTES ABOUT ADVERSITY

  • Stars may be seen from the bottom of a deep well, when they cannot be seen from the top of the mountain. So many things are learned in adversity that the prosperous man dreams not of.      --Charles H. Spurgeon

  • The diamond cannot be polished without friction, nor the man perfected without trials.    --A Chinese Proverb
  • Our strength often increases in proportion to the obstacles which are imposed upon it.     --Rene Rapin

  • And we know that all things work together for good to those who love God, to those who are the called according to His purpose.      --Roman 8:28

Quote of Wisdom

Be patient enough to live one day at a time as Jesus taught us, letting yesterday go and leaving tomorrow till it arrives.

–John Newton

LETTER FROM THE ISF DIRECTORS
Dear International Friend,

Recently, two of our children have had to travel to different countries for their jobs. After talking to them we have come to realize more than ever that visiting a different country is a wonderful life changing experience. We have also spoken to some American students who have studied abroad. They have expressed that it made them a different person. Although we cannot travel to each country that has been influenced by ISF over the many years, one thing we can do is to encourage you to be a part of ISF with your friendship and participation. Just knowing you and talking with many of you has given us a different perspective

The ISF Annual Picnic is a wonderful time to come and meet new people. Bring a friend with you and we hope each of you will make a new friend that day

--Terry & Pam Tiberio, ISF Directors

Even if you don't usually eat meat, there will be plenty of other food for you to enjoy. If you like, feel free to bring something from your own country to add to the table. There will also be games and swings, etc. for all to enjoy. At around 5:45 PM we will pick up any who need a ride in the ISF van at the side of Hillman Library.
