The Bridge Builder

An old man, going a lone highway,
Came, at the evening, cold and gray,
To a chasm, vast, and deep, and wide,
Through which was flowing a sullen tide.
The old man crossed in the twilight dim;
The sullen stream had no fears for him;
But he turned, when safe on the other side,
And built a bridge to span the tide.
"Old man," said a fellow pilgrim, near,
"You are wasting strength with building here;
Your journey will end with the ending day;
You never again must pass this way;
You have crossed the chasm, deep and wide-
Why build you a bridge at the eventide?"

The builder lifted his old gray head:
"Good friend, in the path I have come," he said,
"There followeth after me today,
A youth, whose feet must pass this way.
This chasm, that has been naught to me,
To that fair-haired youth may a pitfall be.
He, too, must cross in the twilight dim;
Good friend, I am building the bridge for him."

                                                  --Will Allen Dromgoole

“Lay not up for yourselves treasures upon earth, where moth and rust doth corrupt, and where thieves break through and steal: But lay up for yourselves treasures in heaven, where neither moth nor rust doth corrupt, and where thieves do not break through nor steal.”

A SMILE

A smile cost nothing, but gives so much. It enriches those who receive it, without making poorer those who give. It takes but a moment, but the memory of it sometimes lasts forever. None is so rich or mighty that he can get along without it, and none is so poor but that he can be made rich by it. A smile creates happiness in the home, fosters goodwill in business, and is the countersign of friendship. It brings rest to the weary, cheer to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and it is nature's best antidote for trouble. Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is of no value to anyone until it is given away. Some people are too tired to give you a smile. Give them one of yours, as none needs a smile so much as he who has no more to give.

Words of Wisdom

A good father is one of the most unsung, unpraised, unnoticed, and yet one of the most valuable assets in our society.
                                                                                                            -- Billy Graham, Christian Evangelist

My father didn't tell me how to live; he lived, and let me watch him do it.

Smooth seas do not make skillful sailors.

LETTER FROM THE ISF DIRECTORS
Dear International Friend,

     Once again, we send friendly greetings to you, our dear International Friends.  The month of April brought beautiful and warm sunny weather to the Pittsburgh area.  On many days it was not necessary to wear a jacket and we had very little rain most of the month.  Last spring we bought an “azalea.”  We wondered if it would survive the winter. Just recently it started to shows signs of blooming once again. It reminds us of new life and the miracle of God’s creation. In even the smallest details of life we are aware of God’s goodness and love for us.  Each new morning can begin with the assurance that God loves you and has promised to help you through the day.

     It’s that time again to especially remember mothers. This year we will celebrate Mother’s Day on May 9th.  It is interesting to note that National Teacher Day is on May 4th, just a few days before.  God’s purpose is for a mother to be the first teacher a child has.  That is an awesome responsibility.  Many great leaders have recognized their mother as being one of the most important influential people in their life.  My wife and I realize that both of our mothers taught us many valuable lessons that have helped us throughout our journey of life. Take some time to thank your mother for all she has done for you
.
